To kids, it’s play. To parents, a tool. And to Australia, a practical way to help with an epidemic that often turns into a lifetime of poor health outcomes.

Helping Queensland families build healthier habits through play-based science.

My Disciplines: Audience research, Workshop facilitation, UX and UI Design, gaming mechanics

The Problem

In 2022, Health and Wellbeing Queensland commissioned nation-first research with a confronting finding: children born this decade could have shorter lives than their parents due to obesity. If we don’t take action now, the cost of addressing this issue could reach $87 billion over the next decade.

Health and Wellbeing Queensland is working alongside government, sectors and communities to shift the systems that make it harder for children to maintain a healthy weight. Podsquad plays an important role in supporting and strengthening this work to help create a healthier future for our kids

Defining the solution

After workshopping with stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs), we gained a clearer understanding of how we could better engage families and support them in building and maintaining healthier habits.

Program content needed to focus on three key pillars of wellbeing: Move, Eat and Sleep. Through gamification, and other interactive content, families are encouraged to learn about, practise and reflect on their habits across these areas.

How did we reach our audience?

Our research indicated that to maximise engagement we needed to reach children on platforms they regularly use. Most kids are using apps already, so the goal was to shift this engagement in a more positive and useful direction.

Building the experience

Following core product design principles, we created a high-level experience map that combined two key user journeys: one for children and one for their parents or carers. This helped create a more connected experience that made it easier for families to use the product together, encouraging conversations and supporting shared decision-making. Through this core loop parents can add family members to the account, enabling parents to encourage and track their children's progress.
