Helping teens understand the harms of gambling in gaming, through experience
My Disciplines: Audience research, Workshop facilitation, UX and UI Design, gaming mechanics

The problem
The rise of gambling-like activities among young people is a growing concern. Queensland teenagers aged 15-17 years old are often playing games that have many gambling-like components. These teens are 40% more likely to become problem gamblers when adults.
The goal
Design an education program that teaches students about the harms related to gambling and gambling-like activities. In order for the program to be successful we had to find a way to keep students engaged and effectively educate at the same time.
How did we do it?
We conducted interviews with experts in Gambling Health services and focus groups with students to understand how best to reach the target audience.
This crucial research informed our idea, design, user journeys, content strategy, and the production of the website content including animations and quizzes.
We created an optimal learning formula by establishing 3 key pillars.
1.) Learn, through exciting cool animations
2.) Experience, through interactive gaming
3.) Reflection of learning
Co-design approach
We conducted 3 workshops with students, and 4 interviews with Gambling Harm Services community educators. With the combination our expertise, insights from SME’s and target audience, we were able to design an effective and engaging tool for gambling help educators to use in the field.
Wizards & Wagers is a testament to our cross collaborative team - Strategy, Creative, Production, Design, Development and Delivery all contributing to the end product.
